The southern tip of Vancouver Island is abundant with these fascinating creatures. Three resident pods of Killer Whales (Ornicus orca) travel our waters following the Salmon runs. By early summer, these whales number over 90! Transient Killer Whales are seen in smaller groups of five or less, always on the lookout for their main food source-seals. Majestic Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaenglinae), have begun to revisit some of their old summer grounds along the BC coast, and Grey Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) are in the midst of a populated explosion. Shy and unpredictable Minke Whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), the smallest of the baleen whales, are seen solo, or in small groups spring, summer and fall. The playful Harbour Porpoise and Dalls Porpoise can be experienced year round off our coast. If you're lucky they may even decide to take a bow ride, with you just out of touch!
